La Marina Dock

La Marina Dock

A Coruña’s iconic La Marina Dock features stunning 19th-century glass galleries that earned this beautiful Galician seaport its famous 'City of Glass' nickname.

A Coruña's Radiant "City of Glass"

Nestled in the heart of A Coruña, Galicia, the La Marina Dock (Dársena de la Marina) is one of Spain's most striking and photographed waterfronts. It serves as the grand welcome mat to the city, seamlessly blending maritime history with vibrant urban life.

Architecture & History

What makes this promenade legendary is its continuous facade of 19th-century glass galleries (galerías). Originally built between 1870 and 1884, these enclosed wooden and glass balconies were a stroke of architectural genius.

  • The Purpose: They were designed to protect the houses from the fierce Atlantic winds and rain while trapping the sun's warmth, acting as early forms of passive solar heating.

  • The Visual Impact: Because the backs of these homes faced the harbor, they created a massive, uninterrupted wall of gleaming glass. When the coastal light hits the facade, it creates a mesmerizing mirror effect across the water.

The "City of Glass"

It is precisely because of La Marina that A Coruña proudly earned its international moniker, the "City of Glass" (Ciudad de Cristal).

Visiting Today

Today, the area beneath the galleries is a bustling, pedestrian-friendly boulevard. Lined with lively cafes, traditional restaurants, and sunny terraces, it is the ultimate spot for a leisurely stroll (paseo). Visitors can enjoy views of the bobbing sailing boats in the marina, look out toward the historic Castle of San Antón, and feel the authentic, salty pulse of this historic Galician port.
